The tent cabins were the worst we stayed in. We enjoyed every previous lodge we had stayed at during our trip (Olduvai, Serengetti tented camp, Mawe Ninga) which amplified how shockingly bad the Natron camp was. Natron was our last stop in a 10 day safari around Tanzania and was an unwelcome end to an otherwise amazing journey through the parks. The drive to Natron was exhaustively hot and long and Lake Natron was definitely not worth the trip. I am not an extremely picky person, and my husband is even less so. Also, the hominid footstep was another highlight of the trip.… Don’t miss visiting the Waterfall near Ngare Sero village, is a unique experience (better than viewing flamingos in the lake). His approach to sharing information about the Lake and the communities, interacting with the kids and adults, and overall care of the participants of his guided excursion was great. The best part of our stay in Lake Natron Tented Camp was the guided services provided by Lanjoo Masiaya (+255783195987 or +255 (0)687 807 385). The breakfast is African Standard (eggs, sausage, beans, pancakes, fruits), and they do provide good coffee and tea during the mornings and during the 4 pm Coffee/Tea Hour. Considering the inexpensive technology available today, such as solar panels, adding charging stations in the individual tents, adding a fan in the rooms and in the common areas (it can get hot), and providing additional internet hours could enhance the visitors’ experience. The outdoor shower was fun with the kids yet is not available in all units.
#LAKE NATRON CAMP UPGRADE#
The rooms are ample, but should get an upgrade soon, considering the cost and what is available in other tented camps in Tanzania. The restaurant was able to accommodate food allergies and vegetarians from our large family group and the place is very safe. The camp provides clean and basic facilities. Located near (a few KM from) Lake Natron, Lake Natron Tented Camp provides a base to explore the Lake Natron ecosystem and communities near the lake. Lake Natron Tented Camp Staff is the best asset of the facilities. After seeing the flamingos, our wonderful Gosheni guide William had set up a table of snacks and drinks to enjoy nearby.…
We were still glad to visit Lake Natron for a different experience from the game drives (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro). Apparently, Lake Natron has the largest gathering of flamingos in the world, over 2 million during certain times of the year. The best part of staying at Lake Natron was the nice Maasai guide Zephanie who showed us the flamingos on the lake. The woodwork of the tented camp is beautiful.
Bottled water for dinner is extra, and they only take cash and cannot give change. There is no electrical outlet in the room, so be sure to charge your phone in the restaurant before electricity shuts down from 10pm to 6am. They will bring you hot water if you request it, but we did not. The shower does not have heated water, just room temperature water, which turned out to be okay once you got used to it. However, my husband had no expectations, so really enjoyed Lake Natron Tented Camp. I had higher expectations for an "exclusive" tented camp (see our other reviews of accommodations in Tanzania).
